The Eco Scout program is an in-person workshop series hosted by Pennsylvania Resources Council and Allegheny CleanWays.
Eco Scouts will immerse themselves in the world of stuff: why we have so much of it, how it gets made and remade, where it goes after we’re done with it, and how it impacts our environment and communities. This program is for inquisitive and enthusiastic adults and teenagers who want to support each other and make deeper connections in their own communities. Each workshop will focus on a different topic and will offer participating Eco Scouts the skills and tools they need to make change in their own communities. Workshop sessions will run every week in McKeesport during the month of October, ending November 5. |

Sessions will include both presentation components, hands-on activities, and local connections to community organizations working in the world of stuff.
Participants will earn exclusive Eco Badges, designed by a local artist, for every workshop they complete. Eco Scouts who earn all 5 badges will receive a final fun, creative, and unique reward. Space, supplies, and badges are limited to 25 households. 2026 Session BreakdownOctober 1: Orientation

Explore practical zero-waste strategies that work in everyday life, learn how recycling systems operate, and discover how community action can create cleaner neighborhoods and a healthier future. October 15: Organize a Community Cleanup
Learn how to organize a successful community cleanup and bring people together around a shared goal. Gain hands-on leadership skills, learn safe cleanup practices, and receive a free cleanup kit while supplies last. Whether you're looking to beautify your block, support local pride, or inspire others to get involved, this workshop will help you get started. October 22: Food wise
Discover creative ways to reduce food waste, save money on groceries, and make the most of what you already have at home. Learn practical tips for finding affordable food, storing ingredients effectively, and preparing delicious low-waste meals through a fun, hands-on taste test of food-saving recipes October 29: Waste & Watersheds
Explore how everyday waste impacts local rivers, streams, and drinking water. Hear from community experts and organizations working to protect our environment, and learn how your choices can help create healthier neighborhoods and cleaner waterways for future generations. November 5: Repair & Reuse
Before you throw it away, discover what might be possible to repair, reuse, or reimagine. Connect with local repair experts, build practical skills, reduce household expenses, and help keep usable items out of landfills. Turn everyday problems into opportunities for creativity, self-reliance, and community connection. *Eco Scout participants will receive special badges designed by local artist Mary Tremonte after completing sessions!

How old do I need to be to join?
What do I get out of being an Eco Scout?
Do I have to register for all 6 sessions? Or can I just attend one that I am interested in?
- The program is most suitable for those ages 10 and up, and we will not be able to provide childcare or alternative activities for youth. All Eco Scouts should be capable of sitting through a half-hour presentation in a classroom setting.
What do I get out of being an Eco Scout?
- In addition to the knowledge and community connections you’ll receive as an Eco Scout, all participants will also receive a badge for each session they complete in its entirety.
- Participants in the Community Cleanup session will receive a litter clean up kit. Participants in the repair session will also receive an electronics repair kit. These supplies are limited to one per household.
Do I have to register for all 6 sessions? Or can I just attend one that I am interested in?
- You can opt to attend all 6 sessions or attend the ones you are interested in. You will have to register for each separately. You will receive a confirmation email with a calendar invite for each session. Feel free to call Laura Blood at 412-612-2662 if you prefer to register over the phone.
