Every year, 200 million pickleballs are sold in the U.S. They last for a few months, then they crack, break or wear out. What happens then?
Pickleballs cannot be put into household recycling, and if they are dumped into a landfill they’ll last for hundreds of years. That results in 5,700 tons of pickleballs going into landfills every year. The PickleUp Recycling Program is working to change this! We’ll make sure your cracked, broken or worn-out pickleballs are recycled properly. |

If you’re playing at a court that has our bins (see this list), just drop your broken ball in the bin. It will be collected by a local volunteer and taken to a central collection station, then it will be delivered to an industrial recycling center, shredded and recycled.

If you want to start recycling pickleballs at your courts, PickleUp will give you a free bin. All you need is permission from the court owner or manager to put the bins there, and you need at least one volunteer to periodically collect the broken balls and bring them to any of these locations:

If you want to make a financial contribution to offset the cost of the bins ($50/each), that is completely optional but certainly appreciated. Use PayPal or Venmo to send your contribution to [email protected] , or you can pay when you receive your bin.
The PickleUp Recycling Program serves the greater Pittsburgh PA area. It’s a joint project by Allegheny Cleanways, Pickleball Warehouse, Ultra-Poly, and the RePickle Project. Outside the Pittsburgh area, please contact the RePickle Project to get information on how to start a recycling program in your area. |
