DumpBusters

DumpBusters is Allegheny CleanWays’ dumpsite remediation program.
Our crews and volunteers work in three-hour shifts to clean up illegal dumpsites four days a week, year-round to return illegal dumpsites to as close a pristine state as possible. Removing all evidence of illegal dumping from a site is crucial to help prevent future dumping. DumpBusters crews work on both vacant and city-owned properties in Allegheny County, with a priority placed on those sites which have the most impact on residents.

The task at hand is large, but our crew is actually quite small!
Both the McKeesport and Pittsburgh
DumpBusters are composed of just two crew members. We are volunteer-powered! Depending on the cleanup site, volunteer crew sizes range from one to twenty people.
Explore our dumpsite map to see what we’ve cleaned up, and where we’re working now.

What does it take to be a DumpBuster?
Volunteer crew members must be:

  • Able to comfortably lift 50 lbs
  • Willing to work cooperatively and without judgement of other crew members
  • Punctual
  • Observant of safety protocol

Benefits of being a DumpBuster volunteer:
  • Fresh air and exercise
  • Close encounters with nature and wildlife
  • A rewarding teamwork experience
  • Urban exploring
  • Trash treasure souvenirs!

Y
ou will receive email updates from the program coordinator with available volunteer opportunities and instructions on how to sign up for specific cleanup days. We can’t wait to work with you!

DumpBusters cleanups happen nearly every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9am-noon, and Mondays from 3pm-6pm.
Using people-power, hand tools, garbage cans, a pickup truck, and box dump truck, dumpsites are restored to green spaces. DumpBusters crews are generally composed of two ACW team members and 2-15 volunteers. DumpBusters cleanups take place on varied and challenging terrain, and volunteers should be prepared to get dirty and enjoy a workout!
