From our DumpBusters program to large cleanup events, the work that Allegheny CleanWays does to remove debris from the region’s hillsides, open lots, and greenways is the first crucial step to full restoration of the valuable green spaces that define the City of Pittsburgh.
When possible, Allegheny CleanWays works with other organizations that have a broader restoration goal in mind for the site after the cleanup, such as a trail or garden. When there is no specific goal for the land, we work with local residents to steward and restore the site.

DumpBusters
Staff/volunteer small crew (generally 2-5 people). Volunteer opportunities are available just about every day and staff is often flexible enough to work around your schedule. This crew works all year long, so they can use your help whenever and as frequently as you're available. Not recommended for children under 16 years of age. Large cleanup events These events engage a large group of volunteers to clean up particularly large or difficult dump sites or do a community litter pickup. Great for corporations and universities, as well as community, school or youth groups looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity. This is also a great way for an individual or family to join a larger effort and meet new people. |
Beautification/Stewardship
These volunteer opportunities are less frequent, but are perfect for groups and families. They are often combined with a litter or dumpsite cleanup to make the event more friendly to volunteers with varying skills. If you don't see an opportunity posted, but have a group that would like to do a project, let us know. Project Assistance Each cleanup event involves set up, take down and equipment organization. This is a valuable service with limited time commitments. Gratekeepers
Individual volunteers adopt a storm drain in their community to keep free of debris and litter. Gratekeepers participate on their own schedule. The program is focused on preventing litter on land from entering our waterways. Participants are stewards of the watershed, and gain an understanding and appreciation for the ways our actions on land have far-reaching effects on the health of the waterways. The pilot program is focused on the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh. |
